Great Product Combinations As Per Your Skin

The Ayurveda Experience October 25, 2022

We know that our wide selection of products can be overwhelming because seeing our social media posts and the comments from our customers make it sound like you need to buy one of everything. In reality, you only need to buy products that match your individual skincare concerns; this is why we launched our consultant program. We want to make sure that you get the right products for your skin type, and having the right products means that you will love your results. Not only that but knowing how to use your products, whether you bought one or several, is very important to us.

Our formulations are so beloved and effective that many of our customers want more than one in their daily routines, and we can't blame them. Our team of Ayurvedic skincare experts get a lot of questions about mixing oils or which order to use them when they have multiple oils, so we decided it would be helpful to write an article addressing this question and our recommendations for combinations of products for different skin types and skincare concerns.

Should you mix or layer skincare products?

We recommend layering rather than mixing products, because mixing them changes their chemical composition and may not give you the same benefits and effects of using each as a stand-alone formula that was created with specific concerns in mind. This is why all product lines, regardless of brand or manufacturer, recommend several different products rather than inventing an all-in-one cleanser/toner/serum/sunscreen or something similar.

Using one item, if possible, would save us time and money, but dermatologists and thoughtful creators of skincare lines know that we need separate products to cleanse, prep, treat, and nurture the skin.

Order to use the right Skincare Products

Because we also get a lot of questions about the order in which to use products, I wanted to start here. This is the order in which a person would use their products, and this doesn't necessarily mean that you need each of these products, but this is the recommended order:

    1. Cleanse the skin.
    2. Use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin as well as dirt and pollutants, daily or 2-3 times per week.
    3. Apply a toner, which not only refreshes and hydrates the skin but also prepares it for the next step and allows better absorption of treatments, serums and oils.
    4. I like to add my eye product immediately after my toner, because this area is very delicate, so I don't want to get anything other than a product that's specifically formulated for the eye area near my eyes.
    5. Apply treatment products, such as medicated formulations from a dermatologist or those with ingredients designed to address specific skin conditions. This category also includes serums and oils that are formulated to address the concerns of dark spots or sun damage.
    6. Moisturize the skin with oil or your chosen product. This step not only nourishes the skin but also protects it and seals in the products you applied before.

    How important is skin moisturization?

    1. Protect your skin from the sun. Our products are based on ancient formulations, so they do not contain any SPF. This is why we always recommend using a product with sunscreen, whether it's alone or in a tinted serum or cream. We also recommend that if you use a sunscreen to look for one that is reef safe and with clean, organic ingredients rather than chemicals.

As an additional note, if you use retinoids, they should be used at night because they are easily broken down by sun exposure. In a Dermatology News article, the author also notes that retinoids are usually applied in the recommended order as a treatment product, but if a person has sensitivities to them, they can apply the retinoid after their moisturizer to reduce unwanted side effects.

And as a general rule, if there are multiple serums, treatments or oils, you would use them in order of weight from lightest to heaviest. In most cases, a heavier product can decrease the absorption and efficacy of other products, so they should be applied last.

Now that we've gone over how to layer different skincare products, I want to talk about some of my favorite combinations for different skincare concerns.

I am biased toward this combination because I use it the most:  If you have sun damage or dark spots plus the tendency for congested pores and you're concerned about the signs of aging, apply Paraania either on the entire face or just on areas of concern, and wait a few minutes for it to be absorbed. Next, apply Yauvari Amplified Youth Spring to nourish the skin. Yauvari is an excellent choice for aging gracefully, whether you're seeing early signs of fine lines or if your skin is more mature. I also love Yauvari because it's great for both day and night and can be used on the face, neck and décolleté. Sometimes the skin on my chest gives away my age more than my face, so I'm glad to have an oil that's formulated for this area. Another option is to use Paraania during the day and Yauvari at night to address all of the concerns mentioned above.

Turmerisa Double Turmeric Facial Essence is also a wonderful choice for layering other under oils if you have the concern of discoloration and clogged pores. Turmeric is a natural detoxifier and has amazing anti-inflammatory properties, so it's a powerful ingredient for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin. You can also use it under any product to boost its effectiveness because Turmerisa doubles as an activator.

If you have concerns of discoloration, age spots and/or clogged pores plus dull skin, you can try our Manjistha Magic Duo, which contains a bottle of Paraania for daytime and a bottle of Manjish Glow Elixir for night. Manjistha is a powerful herb that promotes an even complexion and applying it both day and night leads to beautiful, glowing skin.

Another really popular combination is our Youthful Glow Duo for the concerns of fine lines and wrinkles, crepey, dull skin and uneven skin tone. This duo includes a bottle of Yauvari Amplified Youth Spring for daytime and a bottle of Manjish Glow Elixir for night, two of our most popular products.

And of course, we have our best-selling combination--the Day & Night Duo.  This duo is amazing for all ages and skin types, especially anyone who has dry, dull or tired skin or an uneven complexion. The day oil, Kesaradi, contains luxurious ingredients like rose and saffron and the velvety texture of Manjish Glow Elixir is wonderful for nourishing the skin while you sleep.

We would love to hear if you have a favorite combination of products or if you have unique skincare concerns that we haven't mentioned.
