Diabetes Mellitus, popularly known just as diabetes, is a major disease which annually affects more than 80 million peopleworldwide.
1. Nearly 30.3 million people in the US suffer from some form of diabetes
2. Out of them nearly 24% or 7.2 million people are unaware of their condition
3. An estimated 84 million adults have prediabetes – nearly 33.9% of the total adult population in the US
4. More men (36.6%) than women (29.3%) have prediabetes
5. Diabetes is the 4th leading cause of death in developed countries.
6. Undiagnosed diabetes poses risks to develop other serious conditions such as blurry eyesight and loss of vision, cardiovascular diseases, amputations, stroke, liver problems and chronic kidney diseases.
There are 2 major types of diabetes corresponding to unique set of causes.
Type 1 diabetes is a congenital condition which can either be detected as early as within a few days or weeks of birth, or it can manifest in adulthood. In this condition the body fails to produce insulin which ensures proper absorption of glucose in cells. The patient must be administered insulin as it is not produced by the body.
Type 2 Diabetes is the other, more prevalent kind of diabetes. It has a wide variety of causes that range from genetic predisposition to dietary habits and even chronic stress. In this type of diabetes, insulin is produced by the pancreas but isn’t received by the cells, leading to malabsorption of glucose and high blood sugar levels.
Both the types of diabetes can be diagnosed by measuring Hemoglobin A1c levels, which indicate an average measure of blood sugar levels for the past 2-3 months.

However, Ayurvedic texts do not describe Diabetes as merely a high blood sugar condition, but also point it to be a result of irregular eating habits and relative carelessness. There are 20 different kinds of diabetes listed in Ayurveda, ascertained according to the predominant vitiated dosha in each type.
Diabetes is known as Madhumeha in ancient Ayurvedic texts. ‘Madhu’ stands for honey and ‘meha’ stands for urine, literally meaning the disease that causes urine to be sweet. High blood sugar levels spill over in the urine and can be detected. It has been classified as a Maharoga or major disease, as it causes serious health complications if not treated.
