Ayurvedic Immunizations

We are familiar with the word Vaccination, which means injection of a killed microbe in order to stimulate the immune system against the microbe, thereby preventing disease. They work by stimulating the immune system, the natural disease-fighting system of the body. What about Ayurvedic Immunizations ?

In order to improve immunity, ancient Ayurveda used Swarna Prashana. It is a method of administering gold ash (Swarna Bhasma) in very minute quantities to improve immunity, strength, memory and intelligence in children. The original reference for this technique is mentioned in Kashyapa Samhita.

Ayurvedic Immunizations- Mode of administration:

Swarna Bhasma (Gold Ash) is mixed with honey and ghee fortified with Madar, Acorus calamus, Bindweed etc. to children orally.

The pediatric dose

Infancy to 5 years old should take 5 mg per day

For children ages 5 – 10 years old – take 10 mg per day

Children in the age range of 10 – 16 years – indicates 15 mg per day

In current times, swarna bhasma is usually administered with Brahmi Ghrita (Ghee processed with bacopa), since Brahmi is a very good brain tonic and immunity booster. Practically, 1g of gold ash is mixed with 100mL of Ghee and administered orally along with honey.

Benefits of Swarna Prashana or Ayurvedic Immunizations

The benefits of these ayurvedic immunizations are elaborated in “Kashyapa Samhita”, a classical text written before 600 BC.  Swarna Prashana improves:

  • Intellect
  • Digestion
  • Metabolism
  • Strength
  • Complexion
  • It is also known to be auspicious
  • Improves the quality and longevity of life

Duration of Swarna Prashana

Swarna Prashana, can either be given on a daily basis, for a month or once in a month in ‘Pushya nakshatra’ up to 16 years of age.

Importance of Pushya Nakshatra in swarna prashana

Pushya Nakshatra day has a very prominence in swarna Prashana. According to Hindu mythology, the rays radiating on the Pushya nakshatra day doubles the medicinal values present in gold.

Side Effects of Swarna Prashana-

There is no known side effects for swarna prashana. According to classical Ayurveda “By administering Swarna for a month time, child becomes super-intelligent. By administering for up to six months, person becomes Shruta Dhara – can remember whatever she hears.”
